When doing business in a country where people speak a different language, many companies have made the mistake of not recognizing, or simply ignoring this barrier.

WHAT COULD HAPPEN WHEN THE LANGUAGE BARRIER IS IGNORED OR NOT AVERTED APPROPRIATELY?

Consider the following cases:

In Mexico a foreign company brings new machinery. The company uses a person from its own staff to do the translation. The result: an operator is killed in Mexico due to a faulty Operation Manual translation. The company is sued over the incident. The company’s reputation in the international arena is shattered.

In Japan a foreign company uses an employee as an interpreter. Due to her lack of experience the interpreter misses a couple of key details. Because of the missing details, the company misses the opportunity to get a huge contract in Japan.

Another common mistake is the belief that "Everybody speaks our language" or "the client's knowledge of our language is good enough". Often, people in the host country will bend over backwards to accommodate incoming companies and their capital influx. For this reason they will, in good faith, try to use their staff’s knowledge of the incoming company's language to conduct business.

It is in the interest of both parties not to do this. Mistakes due to inexperience in translation can be avoided. When it comes to interpreting (real time translation) fear to say it "as it is" (due to respect to the boss, or for cultural reasons) can create a problem when in-house people act as interpreter. When a professional translator or interpreter is involved, companies are guaranteed to get the best opportunity to start on the right track and the possibility of doing business can be kept.

Experienced international companies don’t try to cut corners in translation. They just do it right, hiring professionals, or they save time and money not even trying. First impressions are difficult to change. The text you present to your prospective clients is the first impression they get from you.

Last but not least:

Please remember to set aside enough time for translation. Editing a translation is time consuming. Also be aware that in some languages there could be an increase of up to 30% in the size of an English original document. This means the number of pages will increase and indexes will have to be adjusted because the original location has changed.
